Where cuisine, cocktails and live jazz meet - rooted in the rhythm, rebellion and soul of Marabi.
Where it Began
In the 1920s and 1930s, the rise of the Doornfontein slumyards, created in the wake of one of the world’s richest gold rushes, gave birth to an urban culture known as ‘marabi’. At its heart was music that was energetic, improvisational and alive - the soundtrack to a way of life shaped by the need to escape the hardships of the working week. In illegal shebeens, fierce political conversation unfolded alongside the equally disruptive sounds of jazz, creating a culture defined by freedom, expression and community.
Then
The Marabi Club was created to honour that history, bringing its spirit to life through considered interiors, exceptional food, a long bar, beautifully crafted drinks, warm service and unforgettable live jazz. From its original home beneath Hallmark House, Marabi became one of Johannesburg's most distinctive music and dining experiences - a place where the city's past and present met beneath one roof.
Now
The story continues. Carrying its heritage, energy and unmistakable character forward, the next chapter of Marabi opens its doors in the heart of Steyn City
